Distance from Hay: In the centre of Hay on Wye
This bijou residence, nestling above one of Hay’s leading art galleries, is an oasis of calm and yet situated right in the heart of Hay Central. With views up to the castle and down to the streets below, it is the perfect eyrie to watch the world go by amid the hustle and bustle of this famous town of books. Entrance is by way of the front door sandwiched between The Table and Richard Booths Bookshop. A narrow book-papered hallway, good for leaving muddy boots and wet coats, leads to a generous staircase and landing hung with artwork from the gallery below. Val, the owner, lived here before moving around the corner and her artistic flair is well in evidence. The large front room overlooking Lion Street is a delight; comfortable armchairs, two window seats, a contemporary, low back sofa with room for two and a circular dining table, commissioned from local furniture designer Rob Barnby ... and not forgetting the 48” colour television! The kitchen is well equipped with a Bertazzoni range cooker, Dualit kettle and toaster and the Booths willow pattern crockery is all from Val’s childhood. A narrow flight of stairs leads up to the cosy bedroom with an impressive Kingsize French bateau lit. With feather pillows and duvet, Egyptian cotton linen a blissful night’s sleep is guaranteed. The shower room is no less impressive with a rain-head shower, Egyptian cotton towels and a stone milking trough sink originally from Val’s house in France.
